QUEENS, N.Y. -- Certain golf courses play well for certain players and teams, and the St. John's women's golf team is hoping that Independence Golf Club is one of those courses for the Red Storm as it competes in the Spider Spring Invitational from Monday, March 26 to Wednesday, March 28.
"We are looking forward to playing in this event; we are playing at the same course where we won in the fall, so the team feels comfortable with this course," head coach Ambry Bishop said. "The course is playing much different due to extremely wet conditions. With the conditions, it will be important for our team to be patient."
In the fall, the Red Storm completed a nine-stroke comeback in the final round to win the Richmond Spider Invitational for its first victory of the season. Sophomores Harin Lee and Stephanie Eybers finished third and eighth, respectively to lead St. John's to victory. All five Red Storm golfers notched top-30 finishes, including four in the top-20.
In 2011-12, St. John's has been consistent, with five top-5 finishes in six tournaments, including three top-3 placements. The Johnnies are coming off a second-place finish at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, where Lee placed third and junior Jennifer Neville finished sixth to record her first top-10 of her Red Storm career. Eybers had her second-best finish of the year as she posted a season-low 73 in the first round en route to 13th place in the tournament.
Independence is a par-72 that will play 6,042 yards. Competing against the Red Storm will be Richmond, Central Connecticut State, Georgetown, Hofstra, Lehigh, Mount St. Mary's, Robert Morris, Long Island, Rollins College, Saint Francis, Sacred Heart, Siena, Youngstown State, and Methodist.
