St. John's Women's Golf Retains Crown At St. John's Invitational|

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The sun wasn’t the only thing glowing on Tuesday afternoon at Eisenhower Park as the St. John’s women’s golf team retained its title with a first place victory at the St. John’s Invitational.
The victory came with no surprise after Rachel Carpenter picked up her first collegiate individual championship title after carding a 150 (+6), ousting fellow teammate Harin Lee by one stroke to help lead the Red Storm to victory.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see the fruits of my labor after having struggled so much with my game for a few years,” said Carpenter. “This is a testament to the incredible and encouraging people that have helped me since transferring to St. John’s and I’m so thankful for all of it.”
Lee improved in Tuesday’s second round as well, carding a team-best 74 en route to a two-day total of 151 (+7) and a tie for second with Siena’s Victoria Nguyen.
The win could not have came without the improvement of Jennifer Neville who picked up seven strokes in round with a 76, placing her in a tie for 12th with a 159 (+15). Only one stroke behind Neville was Stephanie Eybers who rounded out the team’s total with a 160 (+16) to give the Red Storm a 13-stroke advantage with a 313-304—617 (+41) over second place Siena.
“It was nice to see our team defend their title at our home tournament,” said St. John’s head coach Ambry Bishop. “The weather had a big impact for some tough scoring conditions throughout the tournament, but our team stayed patient and played much better today.”
Anna Kim also finished in the top 20 for the Red Storm after improving four strokes in round two to finish the tournament with a 162 (+18). Both St. John’s individuals remained consistent through the two rounds as Cameron Lambertson finished with a 163 (+19) to tie for 20th overall while Brittany Hurst carded a 184 (+40) for 62nd.
St. John’s led the field in all statistical categories, recording 21 birdies in the two rounds including six by Carpenter and five by each Neville and Lee.
“It was great to see Rachel pick up her first tournament title,” Bishop added. “She works very hard on her game and is very deserving of her success.”
With the victory, the Red Storm will next head to Piscataway, N.J. to round out the fall season with the Rutgers Women’s Invitational from Oct. 14-15.
