QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Jen Leaverton and freshman Kerry Cummings each tallied a goal as the St. John's women's soccer team played No. 16 Maryland to a 2-2 draw in an exhibition contest at Belson Stadium. The game was divided into three 35-minute periods. Junior Kristin Russell started in goal and made four saves in a scoreless first period. "I was happy with the way we played today against such a great opponent," said head coach Ian Stone. "We had a lot of great individual performances, but I was most impressed with the way we played as a team." The Terrapins controlled play early, attempting five shots on goal in the opening stanza. Russell, however, was up to the challenge and made four stops. Freshman Sarah Ashmore added a defensive save to keep the game scoreless after one period. St. John's got on the board quickly in the second period to take a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the frame. Following a throw in, Leaverton gained possession and ripped a shot inside the near post from 25-yards out. The Red Storm extended its lead to 2-0 just three minutes later. Jen Gibbons fired a shot on goal from the right side of the box, but the Maryland keeper could not corral it. Cummings collected the rebound and quickly slid a shot past the keeper. St. John's maintained the offensive pressure throughout the period, totaling five shots. The Terrapins, though, made it 2-1 with a goal late in the frame. St. John's added four more shots in the third period as it looked to extend the lead, but Maryland kept it a 2-1 score. The Terrapins had a great opportunity to even the game midway through the period with a free kick from 19-yards out, but freshman Lauren Ferris made a great save on the effort. Maryland, however, found the equalizer with nine minute remaining in the contest and the game ended in a draw.
Sophomore Meredith Kenyon and junior Lindsey Hall combined for two saves in the second period, while Ferris totaled two saves in the third stanza. St. John's returns to action at Belson Stadium at 1 p.m. on Aug. 15 with an exhibition contest against Massachusetts. |
