Red Storm Opens Preseason With 1-0 Exhibition Win Over Lehigh|
Aug. 13, 2014
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team kicked off the 2014 preseason in exciting fashion as it took a 1-0 victory in an exhibition match over Lehigh on Wednesday night.
After pushing forward in the Mountain Hawks' defensive end for the majority of the first 20 minutes, the Red Storm was able to put together an opportunity on a Morgan Tinari corner with 23 minutes to go in the first half. With the St. John's offense crashing into the box, Tinari sent a cross from the far corner towards the middle of the box where she found the head of the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Rachel Daly to give the Red Storm the early 1-0 lead.
Despite out-shooting Lehigh, 7-1, in the first half, the Red Storm was unable to add on another goal as it took its lead into the half, but Kelly Crevani was able to keep the Mountain Hawks away from the net as well. Lehigh began to attack more aggressively in the second half, but the Red Storm was able to continue to pull together and settle in on defense.
"It was great to see all these girls, especially the newcomers, get the opportunity to work together and get the minutes tonight," said head coach Ian Stone. "The squad really stepped up in the second half and began to settle in and get the touches I wanted to see later in the game."
Stepping up is exactly what the team did late in the game as Sarah Chaides was able to come up with a big save with just 2:30 left in the game and preserve the shutout to give St. John's the 1-0 victory.
The Red Storm will return to action for its final exhibition game of the preseason on Saturday as it hosts Rider in a 7:30 p.m. match following the conclusion of the men's exhibition at 5:30 p.m.
