DALY DOUBLE: Rachel Daly Gives Red Storm 2-1 Overtime Victory Over Delaware|
Aug. 29, 2014
NEWARK, Del. – Junior Rachel Daly made the most of her shot opportunities on Friday night, netting two of her three attempts to give the Red Storm a 2-1 overtime victory over Delaware.
The Blue Hens came out attacking right away with a shot in the first minute, but sophomore goalkeeper Diana Poulin was able to hold her ground and make the early save. Delaware would continue to try and make opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Red Storm, 11-0, over the first 45 minutes, but only placing two of those shots on goal.
After Poulin came up with another stop to open the second half, the Red Storm began its attack as Caitlyn McLaughlin led Rachel Daly to a ball which she was able to send into the bottom-right corner of the net, marking the first St. John’s shot of the game, to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Hens continued to take their shots late into the second half with a header by Mikala Kin off a corner attempt, but Poulin was able to step up big and make the save to preserve the 1-0 lead with just over four minutes to play.
With just over a minute to go in regulation, Nikki Adams sent an equalizer from about 18 yards out along the right side of the box to tie the game up and take away the Red Storm’s potential shutout and send the game into overtime.
St. John’s wasted no time in overtime as it earned a corner only two minutes into the period, but Rekos was able to make the initial save on a Jesse Schaefer shot attempt. Less than a minute later, Jen Gibbons was able to get the ball to Daly for a one-on-one opportunity as the junior sent one into the lower right-hand side of the net for the game-winner and earn the Red Storm a 2-1 overtime victory.
Despite being outshot by the Blue Hens, 19-5, the Red Storm capitalized on its shot opportunities as it sent four of its five shots on goal compared to Delaware’s five on goal.
