BIG EAST Release
Bellero tallied five points on a pair of goals and an assist as the Red Storm defeated Marist on Tuesday before knocking off Fairfield Sunday night. The Melville native has now scored a goal in each of the team’s first three games, becoming the first St. John’s player to do so since at least 2008, when game-by-game records became readily available.
Against Marist, Bellero opened the scoring in the 61st minute. After a pair of one-touch passes from Mariela Jacome and Lucy Whipp, Bellero beat the keeper to put the Johnnies ahead, 1-0. Bellero later assisted on Jacome’s eventual game-winning goal as the Johnnies defeated the Red Foxes, 2-1, on Belson Stadium.
On Sunday, Bellero, who has matched her 2016 goal total in the first three games this season, received a pass from Claudia Cagnina out of the midfield, beat her defender and sent a long shot into the back of the net to give the Johnnies an insurance goal in the 64th minute.
For the week, Bellero recorded nine shots, eight of which were on target for a .889 shot on goal percentage. On the year, Bellero’s three goals and 4.33 shots per game rank second in the BIG EAST, while her seven points rank third. Additionally, her 2.33 points per game lead the league.
The Red Storm returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 1 when it begins play in the CCSU Tournament in New Britain. The Johnnies will take on UConn at 4:30 p.m. before squaring off with Harvard on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 3:30 p.m.
