Kingston, R.I. – The Red Storm women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 overtime decision this evening in the opening game of the Comfort Suites/URI Invitational.

Jennifer North beat the final St. John’s defender just outside of the 18-yard line and sent the ball to the upper right corner, past Red Storm keeper Gabriela Franco (Brentwood, N.Y.) at the 97:10 mark of the first overtime period to lead the Huskies to the 1-0 win.

St. John’s out shot Northeastern 22-10, including a 12-5 slant on shots on goal and a 6-1 advantage in overtime. The Red Storm had several scoring opportunities throughout the game, including a 40-yard run by Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) that was blocked by a Northeastern defender 10 yards from the goal with under ten minutes to play in regulation.

St. John’s final scoring opportunity came four minutes into the overtime period when Lauren McGrory (Hauppauge, N.Y.) placed a corner kick in front of the net and shots by Dominica Reina (Frankfort, N.Y), Courtney Rett (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.) were deflected in the clutter in front of the net.

Franco, who earned her first start at St. John’s, finished the game with four saves in the net. Cynthia Slowik had 12 saves en route to the shutout for Northeastern.

The Red Storm will return to action on Sunday with a game against James Madison. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon.
