Kingston, R.I. – The Red Storm women’s soccer team fell to the Dukes of James Madison University today by a score of 1-0 in game three of the URI/Comfort Suites Invitational. St. John’s falls to 0-2 on the season, while JMU improves to 1-1.
The Dukes took the lead late in the first half when Christy Metzger served a free kick from 20 yards out to the head of Lyanne Dupra on the left side of the goal. Dupra’s header crossed the net when Abby Karpinsky tipped it in behind St. John’s keeper, Gabriela Franco (Brentwood, N.Y.) for the 1-0 advantage at the 37:08 mark. St. John’s was on the attack for the majority of the second half, with their best opportunities coming half way through the period. Kaitlin Schmidt’s (Centereach, N.Y.) quick-footed moves on inside the 18-yard box left the keeper between her and the game-tying goal, but Jessica Hussey made the save for James Madison. Three minutes later, Courtney Rett’s (Valley Stream, N.Y.) attempt was also blocked by Hussey. James Madison’s best attempt at an insurance goal came with ten minutes remaining in the game. Franco defended the St. John’s net with one of her four saves on the day, tackling the Dukes’ forward and taking the ball on the breakaway attempt. The Red Storm out shot the Dukes 12-5, including eight shots on goal to the Dukes’ five.
St. John’s will be back in action on Friday, September 5 at Binghamton.
