QUEENS, N.Y. -
Just days after leading the St. John’s women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UConn, junior Christina Bellero was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second-straight week.

Playing in the CCSU Tournament hosted by Central Connecticut State over the weekend, the Johnnies took on the UConn Huskies on Friday. The Huskies entered the 2017 season ranked 14th in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches Association preseason poll.

After a scoreless first half, Bellero connected on a header in the 50th minute off a long pass from Lucy Whipp. The tally was Bellero’s fourth goal in as many games to open the 2017 campaign, surpassing her 2016 total of three goals in 20 matches.

Bellero’s game winner extended the Red Storm’s unbeaten streak to four games to start the season before the Johnnies fell to Harvard in double overtime on Sunday.

Through five games, Bellero leads the BIG EAST with nine points (four goals, one assist), 1.80 points per game, goals, and goals per game (0.80). Additionally, her 14 shots and 2.80 shots per game rank fifth in the league.

After three straight on the road, Bellero and the Red Storm return to Belson Stadium on Friday, Sept. 8, when the Johnnies host Loyola Maryland at 6 p.m. Friday’s match will be the first of three ESPN3 broadcasts for the Red Storm this season.
