Red Storm Snap Three-Game Skid, Beat Siena 3-2

Loudonville, N.Y. A trio of career-first goals lifted the Red Storm womens soccer team to a 3-2 win over Siena, and snapped a three-game losing streak for St. Johns.

Erin Henderson (Watervliet, N.Y.), Natasha Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Mallory DiMaio (Orefield, Pa.) each knocked in the first goal of their respective careers to lead the Red Storm to their first win of the season.

Henderson opened up the scoring in the game at the 14:44 mark of the first half. Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) fed the ball from the left side of the field, across the mouth of the goal, to Henderson breaking on the right side. The sophomore blasted the ball to the lower left corner of the net, tallying the Red Storms first goal of the season and the first of her career.

The Saints attacked one minute later, but could not connect on their best opportunities of the first period, as a free kick from 20 yards out sailed wide.

The Red Storm opened scoring in the second half when Lee sent the ball over the fingertips of the Siena net minder from 20 yards out with 34:40 remaining in regulation. The freshman connected on the first goal of her career after weaving her way through three Saints defenders and setting up the shot from outside the 18-yard marker.

St. Johns third and game-winning goal came with just over 11 minutes remaining. Henderson tapped the ball to Schmidt on a free kick opportunity. Schmidts cross found the head of DiMaio who netted the ball behind the keeper on the left side of the goal.

Sienas late-rally began just three minutes after the Red Storms final goal, as Kristen Turner knocked in a shot after an attempt to clear a Saints corner kick failed. The Saints rally continued, but was not enough, as their final goal came with 36 seconds remaining, and the Red Storm took the game 3-2.

Gabriela Franco (Brentwood, N.Y.) finished with five saves for St. Johns, and recorded the first win of her career.

The Red Storm will open the 2003 home slate at Belson Stadium on Thursday, September 11 against BIG EAST rival, Notre Dame.
