Jamaica, N.Y – The St. John’s women’s soccer team dropped the 2003 home opener with a 2-0 loss to nationally ranked Notre Dame this afternoon at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm fall to 1-4 overall, while Notre Dame improves to 5-0.

After a scoreless first period, Amy Warner scored the game-winning goal, and her fourth of the season, at the 50:58 mark. Warner picked up a pass from Katie Thorlakson 18-yards out and shot the ball out of the reach of Red Storm keeper, Tracey Rollings (Paignton, England) (0-1), on the right post.

Notre Dame controlled the ball for most of the first half, resulting in eight shots, to the Red Storm’s one and took the lead early in the second. The Red Storm fought back and dominated play for a 12-minute stretch, highlighted by their best opportunity, which came in the 61st minute of play. Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) crossed the ball from the left side to the far post where Holly Ryder’s (Plantation, Fla.) header hit the right post and bounced back into play. Dominica Reina (Frankfort, N.Y.) picked up the loose ball and shot it wide. Notre Dame’s defenders attempt to clear the ball failed and Erinn Flaherty (Clifton Park, N.Y.) missed the rebound wide on the right side.

Minutes later, Schmidt beat the encroaching Notre Dame goalkeeper but an Irish defender defected the ball out of bounds.

Notre Dame added an insurance goal with 32 seconds remaining in regulation when Amanda Guertin chipped in a 20-yard shot over an outstretched Rollings.

In her first start of the season, Rollings finished the game with seven saves for the Red Storm. Erica Bohn made two saves in the net for Notre Dame, her second shut out this season.

St. John’s will return to action on Sunday, September 14, when they travel to West Virginia in a rematch of last season’s BIG EAST Tournament first round contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
