BIG EAST Release
QUEENS, N.Y. - After making a season-best nine saves against DePaul, senior Diana Poulin has been named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, the league announced Monday. Additionally, sophomore Samie Scaffidi was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after scoring the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over the Blue Demons.
Poulin, who entered the match as the BIG EAST leader in goals-against average and save percentage, kept the Blue Demons off the board after they had been averaging more than three goals per contest during a seven-game win streak that came to an end at Belson Stadium on Saturday. The shutout was Poulin’s 10th clean sheet of the season, which tied a program record for the most in a single season held by Kristin Russell (2008-11). Poulin’s league-leading GAA dropped to just 0.44, which also ranks eighth-best in the NCAA. Her .881 save percentage also leads the conference and sits 14th in Division I.
Scaffidi provided a much-needed offensive spark for the Red Storm on Saturday, registering the game-winner in a 1-0 win over DePaul. After Poulin made a save in the 75th minute, the Red Storm went on the attack. Morgan Tinari eventually found Scaffidi at the top-right of the box and from there, the sophomore made her way through three quarters of the Blue Demon defense before settling the ball on her right foot and sending a shot just inside the lower left post, giving the Red Storm the 1-0 advantage.
Poulin, Scaffidi and the rest of the Red Storm return to action on Thursday when they head to Xavier for a BIG EAST battle. The opening kick is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
