Nov. 21, 2011
QUEENS, N.Y. - With St. John's women's soccer season three weeks into the offseason, head coach Ian Stone will continue to hone in on his coaching tactics as he leads his Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) Region 1 (East) U-17 squad to the Thanksgiving Interregional tournament over the weekend.
The Interregional tournament is held from Nov. 18-25 in Boca, Fla. All four regions will compete for an interregional championship as national pool candidates are recruited for the U.S. National Team training camp.
As head coach of the ODP Region 1 U-17 squad, Stone is part of the long and prestigious process that helps youth players be identified for a chance to play for the U.S. National Team. Region 1 is one of four regions that compete for youth players to represent the U.S.
On June 10, Stone and his assistants attended a 16-team tournament in Mercer Country Park, N.J. to identify players to potentially represent Region 1. From there, these players attended camp at University Rhode Island, where Stone narrowed his list to the 30 best players.
For this weekend's tournament, Stone's Region I squad consists of 18 players, five identified as national prospects. Of the 18, 15 have already committed to Division I schools. Of the four interregional squads, 64 players are Division I recruits.
This is Stone's fifth year as a member of the Region 1 senior staff, his first as head coach. He served as assistant coach from 2007-10, including helping assist the 2007, 2008 and 2009 ODP Interregional champions.
Stone has been with the Olympic Development Program for 13 years as the head coach of Eastern New York South. As head coach, he led the team to a US Youth Soccer ODP National Championship in 2005, to an appearance in the national finals in 2001 and to four Region I Championships (2000, 2002, 2004 and 2005).
Stone is on the cusp of beginning his 18th season at the helm of the Red Storm program. He is the third longest-tenured head coach at St. John's and the third-ever head coach of the Red Storm's women's soccer program. Stone boasts the title of all-time winningest coach in St. John's women's soccer history with 12 postseason tournament appearances, a 2009 NCAA Tournament berth, BIG EAST (1994) and ECAC (2002) championship titles, 2006 BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors and 2009 NSCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year accolades. He is also a two-time winner of the St. John's Herbert Hess Coach of the Year award, winning in 1998 and 2008.
