QUEENS, N.Y. - Both the St. John's men's and women's teams were recognized for their academic accomplishments by the National Soccer Association of America (NSCAA) as winners of the NSCAA Team Academic Award. It is the fourth-consecutive year that both teams were honored. A total of 787 teams (219 men, 568 women) posted the required team grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the 2010-11 academic year. St. John's was one of 153 programs to have both their men's and women's teams recognized, including one of just six BIG EAST schools. With a 3.40 cumulative team GPA, the St. John's women have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the ninth-straight season (2003-11). The Red Storm had the sixth-highest team GPA of the 15 BIG EAST women's programs, who received the honor. "Our team has worked hard to continue to uphold the program's outstanding academic reputation," remarked women's head coach Ian Stone. "We have been fortunate to have players who pursue success in many areas of their life and take advantage of the full academic experience offered at St. John's University. We are very proud of our student-athletes." The Red Storm men garnered the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the fourth-straight year and the eighth time overall (2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2004, 2003, 2000). St. John's had the fourth-highest GPA of the eight BIG EAST men's programs that received the honor.
"Our program's expectations are for our student-athletes to excel both on the field and in the classroom," said men's head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "This is the eighth time we have earned this honor since 2000 and I think it shows the importance that both our current and former players place on getting the most out of their experience at St. John's University."
