TOWSON, Md. - Following a pair of game cancelations yesterday for the St. John's softball team due to weather conditions in Towson, Md., the Johnnies played their first game of the TU Invite on Tuesday and fell 6-3 in their afternoon matchup with Bucknell.
Despite the loss, seniors Lauren Zick and Savannah Warren each delivered RBI base hits for the Red Storm, while Warren also tallied a run scored.
Madison Morris started in the circle for the Red Storm, but freshman Jessi Bryant relieved her in the bottom of the fourth. Over 2.1 innings of play, Bryant kept the Bison scoreless, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out three batters.
The Johnnies jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as Krystal Puga, Christina Melendez and Marissa Rizzi each reached on a fielding error to load the bases for St. John's. Two batters later, Warren drew a walk to score Rizzi and keep the bases loaded.
In the Johnnies very next at bat, Gretchen Bowie reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Warren and Rizzi to advance and Melendez to score, giving the Johnnies an early 2-0 lead.
Following back-to-back 1-2-3 innings for the Johnnies and the Bison, Bucknell produced four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead.
Both teams failed to score in the third inning before Bucknell drove in two more runs in the fourth, including a leadoff home run from freshman Taylor Wolfgang.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning for each squad, St. John's secured its third and final run of the day, as Zick ripped an RBI single, before the Bison retired the Johnnies in their final at bat.
The Red Storm will return to the field tomorrow when they take on Quinnipiac at 10 a.m. before a rematch with the Bison starting at 12:30 p.m.
