QUEENS, N.Y. -- Despite racking up 26 hits over two games, the St. John's softball team dropped its first two BIG EAST contests of the season on Saturday as DePaul defeated the Johnnies, 10-3 and 10-7, at Red Storm Field on NFCA StrikeOut Cancer day.
GAME ONE: DePaul 10, St. John's 3
Although St. John's (18-12, 6-2 BIG EAST) outhit the Blue Demons (18-15, 4-3 BIG EAST) with 15 hits, three long balls, including a grand slam in the first was the difference as the Red Storm dropped the series opener by a final score of 10-3.
Freshman Gretchen Bowie and juniors Krystal Puga and Lauren Zick recorded three hits apiece to lead the way. Seniors Brittany Garcia and Monique Landini both turned in two-hit performances and combined for an RBI and run. Junior Savannah Warren drove in a run on a base hit, while sophomore Christina Melendez tallied a hit.
Senior Tori Free (4-6) was charged with the loss after surrendering four runs in the first. Sophomore Madison Morris fanned two over 1.2 frames, while junior McKenzie Murray tossed 5.0 innings of two-run ball.
Alysia Rodriguez opened the scoring with a grand slam off Free in the first.
In the second, Nicole Pihl made it a 5-0 contest with a solo blast to right center.
DePaul extended the lead to eight with three runs in the third, which included a two-run homer from Dylan Christensend.
Warren would put the Johnnies on the board in the bottom of the third when she knocked in Landini on a base hit through the left side.
In the fourth, St. John's pushed two across on five hits to shrink the deficit to five runs. After a leadoff double by Puga, Bowie drilled an RBI double to right center for her 30th RBI. Later in the frame, Garcia brought home Hannah Anderson to make it an 8-3 ballgame.
DePaul added a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to make it 10-3 to help snap the Red Storm's six-game winning streak.
GAME TWO: DePaul 10, St. John's 7
Seven runs on 11 hits was not enough as St. John's dropped a back-and-forth slugfest that featured four lead changes and a total of 17 runs and 25 hits.
Zick scored twice, stole two bags and drove in a run to pace the Johnnies attack behind her second-straight three hit contest. Anderson went 2-for-3 with a run for her sixth multi-hit performance. Bowie also tallied two hits, a run and RBI for her team-leading 12th multi-hit game. Landini and Warren both scored and drove in two runs, while Puga had a hit and an RBI.
Murray (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season after yielding two runs in 2.2 innings of relief work. Free fanned two in 3.0 innings of two-run ball, and Kramer struck out three in 1.1 innings as the starter.
DePaul went up early, scoring three runs on three hits in the top of the first.
St. John's answered back with four runs on three extra base hits to take a 4-3 advantage. Zick singled, stole second and scored on Landini's RBI double to left center. Later in the frame, Warren drove in two on a double to left before Puga doubled in a run.
Sparked by Haydn Christensen's home run, the Blue Demons retook the lead in the second with three more runs to go on top of 6-4.

Anderson would lead off the fourth with a triple and come around to tie the game at six on Zick's bunt single. Later in the inning, Landini gave the Johnnies a 7-6 lead on a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Blue Demons led the fifth off with back-to-back hits before Free came in to relieve Murray. Next at bat, H. Christensend knocked in two on a double to put her team back on top for good.
DePaul tacked on two more runs in the sixth before eventually securing its fourth BIG EAST win by retiring six of the next eight Red Storm batters.
