St. John's Plays 12th-Annual 100-Out Game

Oct. 5, 2017

The St. John's softball program hosted its 100-out fundraiser game on Thursday afternoon with Team Storm defeating Team Red, 27-20.

"Today was a good day to work on many different aspects of the game," Head Coach Amy Kvilhaug said. "We practiced anything from situational play to live pitching, we ran the gamut."

The Johnnies were split into two separate squads, Team Red and Team Storm, and played until 100-outs were recorded.

Team Red consisted of McKenzie Murray, Savannah Warren, Kalei Sorensen, Hannah Anderson, Laura Delgado, Gretchen Bowie and Marissa Rizzi. Playing for Team Storm was Madison Morris, Kaitlin Mattera, Krystal Puga, Amelia Ditolvo, Elyse Morris, Gabrielle Conca and Jessi Bryant, while junior Christina Melendez saw action for both teams.

The split squad practiced various real-game situations that kept each player frequently active both mentally and physically.

"It was really a test of our mental toughness," Kvilhaug said. One-hundred outs required a great deal of focus, especially when we threw different caveats out at the athletes that they were required to follow in the different situations that were presented."

Dating back to the inaugural 100-out event in 2006, the Johnnies have raised money for items such as a pitching machine and a V-flex hitting system; with this year's proceeds going towards the team's trip to Palm Springs to compete in a premier, early season tournament.

"Thank you to our administrators who came out to show their support," Coach Kvilhaug said. "Also thank you to all of our donors and future donors. This game was used to fundraise for our team travel, which actually really is more about the vision of the program and where we want to go with it."
