QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Christina Melendez was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after helping the Red Storm take two victories at the FIU Felsberg Invitational this past weekend, the league announced on Monday.
Melendez garnered her first honor roll appearance this season after putting forth a solid performance against powerhouse teams FIU, ECU and South Carolina, to help the Red Storm secure two victories over the weekend.
In Saturday’s sweep of FIU and ECU Melendez had a stellar performance for the Red Storm going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored in the Johnnies first victory of the 2018 campaign against the Pirates. One of those hits came in the top of the second when Melendez extended the St. John’s lead to 6-0 with one swing of the bat, sending a shot over the left field wall for the junior’s first home run of the season.
Melendez followed up that outing with a team-high two hits and two runs scored in the Johnnies’ third game of the Invitational against FIU to help the Red Storm to an 8-0 victory over the Panthers.
Overall on the weekend, Melendez posted a .600 batting average, the highest on the team. In 15 at-bats the junior recorded nine hits and drove in four runs.
St. John's (2-3) returns to the diamond on Feb. 23 when the squad travels to Cathedral City., Calif. to play six games over three days in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
