Sept. 22, 2017
QUEENS, N.Y. - Ten of the 19 players from the St. John’s 2016-17 softball roster were recognized for their academic accomplishments and named NFCA Scholar-Athletes.
The 10 Johnnies who excelled academically are: Graduates Brittany Garcia, Tori Free, Grace Kramer, Alyssa Rusch and Kaitlyn Wilkens. The final six awards were presented to returning seniors McKenzie Murray and Savannah Warren, junior Madison Morris and sophomores Gretchen Bowie and Laura Delgado.
“In staying true to the athletics department mission of embracing excellence, our student-athletes honored by the NFCA are representing not only the department but also the university,” said Head Coach Amy Kvilhaug. “These student-athletes compete at an extremely high level bringing positive recognition to St. John’s. More importantly, they uphold the most important aspect of serving as a student-athlete which is excelling in the classroom.”
Four of the 10 honorees received back-to-back recognition as Kramer, Morris, Rusch and Williams all earned NFCA Scholar-Athlete awards during 2015-16 season.
To qualify for the NFCA Scholar-Athlete award, each player has to achieve a 3.5 GPA or higher during the 2016-17 academic term.
“I have a great deal of appreciation and respect for these student-athletes who seek to excel at optimum levels in all their endeavors” Kvilhaug said. “Especially with the time demands and rigors placed upon them both as a student and athlete. We could not be more proud of the high standards our student-athletes present and the example they have set.”
