Red Storm Softball Holds Seventh Annual 100-Out Fundraiser|
Oct. 5, 2012
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team held its seventh annual 100-out fundraiser and exhibition game Thursday and Friday at Red Storm Field. The team split into two squads and played until 100 outs were recorded, utilizing the time to practice various in-game situations to help the Red Storm for the upcoming 2013 season.
"Our annual 100 out fundraiser inter-squad scrimmage is one of the highlights of our fall season," Kvilhaug said. "It is productive on so many levels. It allows us to improve the program overall as well as practice several different pertinent game-like situations."
Started in 2006, the 100-out fundraiser aims to annually help continue the tradition of softball excellence at St. John's. In the 2012 game, Team Red faced off against Team Storm, with Team Red claiming a dramatic 21-16 win.
Team Storm featured junior Aleshia Link, Kelsey Moyer and Jackie Reed, sophomore Erin Burner, and freshmen Tori Free, Carly Williams, Courtney Budynas and Taylor Hill. Kvilhaug and assistant coach Bob Guerriero served as umpires for the event while seniors Dominique Marcelino and Summer Comstock with sophomore Ellen Czuba served as scorekeepers.
The teams went back and forth throughout Thursday morning before play was halted after 88 outs and Team Red up 16-14. Early on Friday morning, Team Storm quickly plated two runs to tie the score at 16-all. With just five outs remaining in the contest, Montez drove a ball deep over the left field wall for a grand slam to give Team Red the lead for good. Team Red tacked on a final run before the 100th out for the 21-16 score.
"The practice scrimmage was executed very well, working on many of the key aspects of the game that we have focused on throughout the course of the fall.," Kvilhaug said. "All of the skills that we worked on this fall season that culminated at the 100-out game we feel will be an integral part of our team's success in the spring."
This year's efforts at the 100-out game will go to help to bring in a vision training specialist to work with the Red Storm.
