QUEENS, N.Y. -Following a 32-win season, the programs fourth-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Championship, along with being named 2017 BIG EAST regular season champions, Head Coach Amy Kvilhaug has released the schedule for its upcoming 2018 season.
The slate features a total of 54 games, including 17 home contests. The squad will open the campaign with their first 22 games of the season on the road.
The season opening four-game road trip will begin with a visit to Miami, Fla., where the team will partake in the FIU Invitational from Feb. 9-11. The Red Storm will face host team FIU, East Carolina and South Carolina, who finished No. 25 in the USA Today/NFCA coaches poll following the 2017 season.
From one sunshine state to the next, the Red Storm will then travel to the West Coast to compete in one of the top softball tournaments in the nation, the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The tournament features six games against powerhouse teams including Arizona, who finished with a top-10 ranking a year ago. The Johnnies will also take on San Jose State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Northwestern and UC Davis. The team will wrap up the trip with a doubleheader against UC Riverside on Feb. 27.
From there, St. John's returns to the East Coast, but will remain on the road for the Towson University Invitational, featuring five matchups against Quinnipiac (March 2 and 4), Towson (March 2), and Bucknell (March 3 and 4).
Before returning home, the Johnnies will set their sights on the Colorado State Classic from March 9-11 in Fort Collins, Colo., where they will play against host school Colorado State (March 9 and 10), Idaho State (March 9) and Utah Valley (March 10 and 11).
The Red Storm begins home play the weekend of March 16-18 when they kick off their fourth-annual St. John's Invitational. In 2016 the Johnnies swept their lone home event, earning victories in all four games. The tournament will feature two New York schools, Hofstra and Binghamton along with two programs from Massachusetts, Boston University and UMass.
Following a quick turnaround the Johnnies will travel to Stony Brook, where they will play a midweek game against the Seawolves (March 21) before a four game home-stretch that includes their first BIG EAST series with Creighton (March 24-25), and a midweek game against Iona (March 27).
Following their home matchup against the Gaels, the Johnnies wrap up the month of March with a visit to Washington, D.C. for a three-game series against BIG EAST rival Georgetown (March 29-30). Five days later the Johnnies will host Wagner in a midweek game on April 4.
After playing host to the Seahawks, the St. John's softball team swings into April with a trip to the city of brotherly love for its three-game series with conference foe Villanova. The Johnnies will then host four straight home games, beginning with LIU Brooklyn (April 12) followed by a three game conference set against Seton Hall (April 14-15).
Conference play continues for the Red Storm with a trip to The Windy City to take on DePaul (April 21-22). The Johnnies then return to New York to play Manhattan College in Riverdale (April 25) before heading back out on the road for a conference series at Providence (April 28-29).
The Red Storm finishes its regular season nonconference schedule at home with a showdown against local foe and five-time Atlantic 10 Champions, Fordham on May 2. The Johnnies saw success against the Rams in 2016, closing out regular season nonconference play with a 3-0 victory. The Red Storm will wrap up the regular season spring slate with a three-game conference series against Butler (May 5-6).
The BIG EAST Tournament is set for May 11-12 and will be held in Rosemont, Ill. at Rosemont Stadium, home of National Pro Fast pitch Women's Softball team, the Chicago Bandits.
