QUEENS, N.Y. - Opening up its home schedule, the St. John’s women’s tennis team dominated Fairfield, 7-0, on Sunday evening at the National Tennis Center.
“This weekend was a good test to see where we are at and what we need to improve on,” said St. John’s head coach Lauren Leo. “Our objective is to continue to develop with hard work and discipline so we will be ready for conference play.”
After dropping the opening doubles match at the No. 1 position, the Red Storm (1-1) responded with back-to-back wins to claim the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
Olaya Inclan Solis and Irina Preotescu won 6-3 from the No. 2 spot while all-freshman duo of Kajsa Stegrell and Nina Marjanovic clinched the doubles victory for the Johnnies with a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 hole.
Solis kept the momentum going in singles play, picking up a clean sleep, 6-0, 6-0, from the No. 1 position before Stegrell picked up her first-collegiate win 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.
At the No. 2 spot, Zofia Stanisz clinched the match victory for the Red Storm with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Jaide Collins, Marjanovic, and Preotescu each helped up the exclamation point on the victory by all picking up sweeps in the 7-0 rout.
St. John’s will return to the courts for a pair of matches on Feb. 2 at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. First, the Red Storm will battle LIU Brooklyn at noon, and will close the day with Marist at 9 p.m.
