CHARLESTON, S.C. - Keeping up the recent success on the road, the St. John’s women’s tennis team mounted another rally to defeat the College of Charleston, 4-3, on Tuesday in Charleston, S.C.
The Red Storm (6-2) have now won three-consecutive matches, all coming by a 4-3 score, with the previous two coming away from Queens.
After dropping the opening pair of doubles matches to concede the point, Olaya Inclan Solis and Irina Preotescu picked up a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position to look to create some momentum for the Johnnies heading into singles play.
Looking to continue her dominance from the top spot, Jessica Livianu got the visitors on the board with a 6-0, 6-4 victory, but the Cougars (7-2) responded with back-to-back triumphs to put C of C up 3-1.
From there, it was all Red Storm as the Johnnies rattled off three-straight wins to complete the comeback.
Inclan Solis started the rally with a three-set victory from the No. 2 position. After dropping the opening set in a tiebreak, the junior claimed the second and third sets with 6-4 and 6-3 wins.
At the No. 5 spot, Kajsa Stegrell won her opening set in a tiebreaker before dropping the second to send the match to a third set. Heading to a tiebreaker again, Stegrell held off her opponent to even the score at 3-3 and turn all eyes to the No. 3 position.
In keeping theme with the rest of the match, Zofia Stanisz needed to rally from the No. 3 spot in order to claim the match for the Red Storm. The senior fell in the opening set before collecting back-to-back 7-5 victories to complete the comeback, and gave the Johnnies the win.
