CONWAY, S.C. - Closing out a two-match stint in the Palmetto State, the St. John’s women’s tennis team fell, 5-2, to Coastal Carolina on Thursday evening.
The defeat snapped a three-match winning streak for the Red Storm (6-3), and was only the second loss over its previous eight tilts.
Starting in doubles play, the Chanticleers (5-3) won the opening two matches to earn the point. Olaya Inclan Solis and Irina Preotescu put up a fight from the No. 2 position, but ultimately fell 7-6.
The all-freshman duo of Kajsa Stegrell and Nina Marjanovic won their doubles match at the No. 3 spot, rallying for a 7-6 victory of their own.
Heading into singles play, Coastal won the match’s opening three frames to seal the victory.
Jessica Livianu kept up her hot play as of late, defeating Iryna Vardanian, 6-3, 7-5, from the No. 1 position to get the Johnnies on the board.
After dropping her opening set 6-1, Pretoescu rallied for a pair of 6-4 set victories to collect the second singles triumph of the day for the Red Storm.
Jaide Collins engaged in a battle from the No. 4 position, dropping the first set, 6-1, before rallying to claim the second, 6-4, to send the match to a third set. There, Maria Khomchenko collected a 6-4 victory of her own to win the showdown.
St. John’s will close out the four-match road trip on Mar. 2 when the Johnnies battle NJIT in Newark N.J.
