BUFFALO, N.Y. - In its final meet of the fall season, the St. John’s women’s tennis team picked up 13 singles wins and five doubles wins at the UB Indoor Invite in Buffalo, N.Y. over the weekend.
The tournament, hosted by the University of Buffalo at New York, featured four teams competing in a hidden dual format with a round-robin style weekend. While no team scores were kept, singles and doubles were contested in each match. St. John’s squared off against Buffalo, Rutgers, and Binghamton as St. John’s head coach Lauren Leo hoped that the format of hidden duals would help her team prepare for the upcoming dual season in the spring.
Freshman Kajsa Stegrell dominated singles play for the Johnnies, winning all three of her matches. Stegrell defeated Isabelle Da Silva of Rutgers (7-6, 6-3), Paulina Tafler of Binghamton (6-1, 6-4), and Buffalo’s Losada Rubio (6-4, 2-6, 10-8) to complete her perfect weekend.
St. John’s dominated singles play, as every other student-athlete who competed finished with a 2-1 record.
Olaya Inclan Solis defeated Mingxiu Du of Rutgers (6-4, 6-4) before picking up a win over Binghamton’s Samara Eisenberg (6-4, 7-5). The junior’s lone defeat came at the hands of Martinez Blanco from Buffalo (6-2, 6-1).
Jaide Collins also picked up a pair of wins on the weekend, defeating Rutger’s Kathrine Muzik (6-2, 7-5) and Binghamton’s Olga Ostrovetsky (6-1, 7-5).
Zofia Stanisz racked up two wins over Chloe Lee from Rutgers (6-4, 6-2) and Tiffany Dunn of Binghamton (6-1, 6-4) to finish at 2-1.
Continuing to dominate Rutgers and Binghamton, Irina Preotescu beat RU’s Jaci Cochrane (6-4, 6-1) before bullying the Bearcat’s Maria Pandya (6-1, 6-1). The senior nearly finished off a perfect weekend of her own, but fell in a three-set thriller to Buffalo’s Emel Abibula (2-6, 6-4, 10-8).
Nina Marjanovic rolled past Rutger’s Lee Levy (6-3, 6-1) and BU’s Michelle Eisenberg (6-4, 7-6) to conclude the singles weekend for St. John’s with a 13-5 mark.
The domination did not stop at singles play for St. John’s, as the Johnnies captured five doubles wins in just nine matches.
The teams of Stanisz/Collins and Solis/Preotescu both finished with a 2-1 record on the weekend by defeating teams from Rutgers and Binghamton, while Stegrell/Marjanovic picked up a win over Binghamton (6-1).
With the end of the fall season, St. John’s will now begin training for the upcoming dual season in the spring where the Johnnies hope to avenge their loss in the BIG EAST Championship Match last season.
