HANOVER, N.H. - St. John's junior Nevena Selakovic and the Red Storm women's tennis team concluded its fall campaign this past weekend at Dartmouth's highly competitive Big Green Invitational in Hanover, N.H. Selakovic led the Red Storm to wins over Boston University and the University of Massachusetts with an undefeated weekend at the top singles position. St. John's senior Nakita Austin also went unbeaten in singles play.

On Friday, the Red Storm opened the tournament against defending America East champions Boston University. The Terriers took the opening point by winning two of three doubles matches, but Selakovic quickly leveled the match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top position. Austin won a 6-1, 6-4 decision at the No. 5 spot, and sophomore Diamond Adams and newcomer Lyubov Pogirbnyak clinched the match for STJ with straight set decisions at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively.

Tournament host Dartmouth topped the Red Storm on Saturday, but both Selakovic and Austin tallied singles wins at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively.

St. John's concluded the event by defeating UMass on Sunday afternoon. The Red Storm doubles duo of Selakovic and Joanna Zwirbulis won their match at the top spot, while Selakovic added another victory at the top singles position. After losing the opening set, senior Ece Firat bounced back to defeats Yuliana Motyl 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Austin dominated her No. 5 singles match 6-4, 6-2 to conclude an unbeaten weekend for the senior.

 

 

With three singles victories, Selakovic finished with 24 points to claim the title. Players received eight points for a win at No. 1 down to one point for a win at the No. 8 position.
