Taka Bertrand recorded her first victory as head coach of the Red Storm on Jan. 26.
QUEENS, N.Y.– First year St. John’s women’s tennis coach Taka Bertrand is certainly no stranger to recruiting top talent. At her previous stop at the University of Chicago, Bertrand helped assemble and eventually lead a Maroons women’s tennis squad to the Division III National Championship match in the spring of 2012. That season, Bertrand also signed the No. 9 ranked men’s tennis recruiting class, according to tennisrecruiting.net.
Her recruiting prowess has followed her to Queens as Bertrand has announced the first signee in the recruiting class of 2013, from Oss, Netherlands, Puck Vlaskamp.
"We are thrilled to sign Puck Vlaskamp for the class of 2013,” said Bertrand. “She is a serious and motivated young lady, and I foresee her making an immediate impact on our tennis program and having a successful academic career at St. John's"
Vlaskamp has had an extensive history competing in national tournaments while attending one of the best secondary schools in Holland. In the latest Dutch rankings, she was ranked 146th in singles and 108th in doubles. Among her numerous accomplishments as a singles player, Vlaskamp won District Championships in the under 14 and 16 age groups.
She plans on majoring in risk management and insurances upon her arrival to St. John’s in the fall of 2013.
