Jan. 30, 2015
QUEENS, N.Y. – After making it to the BIG EAST Semifinal last spring, head coach Eric Rebhuhn and the St. John’s women’s tennis team start their season on Friday against No. 51 Columbia Lions. The Red Storm hopes to make a run for the BIG EAST Championship and its scheduled to face strong conference and non-conference foes along the way.
This season, St. John’s will face conference rivals Georgetown (Feb. 6), Creighton (Feb. 24), Villanova (Mar. 18), Xavier (April 10), Seton Hall (April 11), and Providence (April 18). Some highlights on the non-conference schedule include a match against a Drake team that fell short of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship (Feb. 27) and three-time America East Conference champion Stony Brook (Mar. 17).
“A new season is always exciting,” Rebhuhn said. “We’re looking forward to playing a very tough schedule that will give us the opportunity to develop a team chemistry that will enable us to win the BIG EAST Championship.”
The Red Storm returns three starters from last year’s lineup that went 11-9 overall and 4-0 in the BIG EAST. St. John’s proved to be dominant on its home court, posting a 6-1 home record. Senior Anastasia Polyakova brings experience to the lineup alongside returning sophomores Stephanie Elgegren and Anna Morozova. Morozova lead the team in singles victories last spring, with a singles record of 14-6 as a freshman, going undefeated, 4-0, in conference play. The team welcomes four newcomers; transfer Natalie Vavulina, and freshmen Jaide Collins, Irina Preotescu, and Zofia Stanisz.
