QUEENS, N.Y. - Looking to continue dominance on its home court, the St. John’s women’s tennis team will welcome a pair of Empire State opponents on Friday.
Starting at noon, the Red Storm (1-1) will battle LIU Brooklyn (2-0) before squaring off with Marist (1-1) at 9 p.m. Both matches will take place at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Last weekend, the Johnnies opened up the dual-match season with a 1-1 mark, falling, 6-1, at Harvard and defeating Fairfield, 7-0.
In Cambridge, the Red Storm was led by the doubles pairings of Jaide Collins / Zofia Stanisz and Olaya Inclan Solis / Irina Preotescu as both pairings captured victories to earn the doubles point. After dropping the doubles play point, Harvard picked up six sweeps in singles play, to close out the win.
Sunday was a different story for St. John’s, rolling past Fairfield in a 7-0 sweep. Solis kept the momentum going in singles play, picking up a clean sleep, 6-0, 6-0, from the No. 1 position before Kajsa Stegrell picked up her first-collegiate win 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.
At the No. 2 spot, Stanisz clinched the match victory for the Red Storm with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Nina Marjanovic, Collins, and Preotescu each helped up the exclamation point on the victory by all picking up sweeps in the 7-0 rout.
LIU Brooklyn enters the weekend with a 2-0 record, fresh off an opening-day win over St. Francis (7-0) and a road win at Saint Peter’s (7-0). The Blackbirds, who are defending Northeast Conference champions, return reigning NEC Player of the Year, Anna Grigoryan, and NEC Rookie of the Year, Sasha Bollweg.
Marist will search for its second win of the dual-match season, invading Queens with a 1-1 mark. The Red Foxes defeated Rider, 7-0, before falling to BIG EAST foe Seton Hall, 6-1, last Sunday. Marist was selected third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) after reaching the conference semifinals a season ago. Saturday’s tilt will be the second of 10-consecutive matches away from Poughkeepsie.
St. John’s will head right back into action on Feb. 4 with a trip to Amherst, Mass. to battle Massachusetts at the Mullins Tennis Courts.
