Empire State Showdown Awaits St. John's

Feb. 8, 2018

QUEENS, N.Y. - Looking to continue the dominance on its home court, the St. John’s women’s tennis team host Buffalo on Friday afternoon at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.

The Red Storm (3-2) will look for its fourth win this season at the National Tennis Center, and fourth win overall.

Last weekend, the Johnnies played in a trio of dual matches, defeating LIU Brooklyn and Marist at home before falling at UMass on Sunday.

During Friday’s sweep over the Blackbirds and Red Foxes, the Johnnies got off the start they wanted against LIU as Jaide Collins and Zofia Stanisz captured a 6-2 victory from the No. 1 position in doubles play.

After dropping a match from the No 2 spot, the all-freshman pairing of Kajsa Stegrell and Nina Marjanovic claimed the doubles point for the Red Storm in a back-and-forth, 7-6 (2) win.

Moving into singles play, Jessica Livianu returned to action for St. John’s following an absence from the team’s win over Fairfield last week by making quick work of her opponent in a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing from the top position.

Rolling into the finale, the Johnnies picked up where they left off in doubles play by picking up two quick wins to earn the doubles point. Collins and Stanisz won handedly, 6-0, while Solis and Irina Preotescu battled for a 6-3 victory. Olaya Inclan Solis moved into the No. 1 position for the second time this season, and remained perfect from the top spot with a 6-0, 6-3 win.

Sunday, St. John’s captured the doubles point again as Solis and Preotescu won from the No. 2 position while Stegrell and Marjanovic captured a victory from the No. 3 spot.

The Minutewomen responded with four-consecutive victories in singles play to secure the win.

Preotescu ended the night on a high note for the Johnnies by picking up a positive decision from the No. 6 spot. The senior dropped the opening set, 6-2, before answering with a decisive, 6-0, victory to send the match to a third set. In that final set, the Romanian withstood a back-and-forth affair to hold on for the 6-4 win.

Buffalo enters the weekend with a 1-0 mark, fresh off a season-opening victory over St. Bonaventure. The Bulls were selected as the favorite in the MAC after winning the conference tournament a season ago.

The visitors are led by 2017 All-MAC First Team selection Tanja Stojanovska, who posted a 9-5 singles mark last season.

Following Friday’s match, St. John’s will head on the road for four-consecutive matches as the Johnnies will open the trip at Fordham on Feb. 16.
