QUEENS, N.Y. – Second year St. John’s women’s tennis coach Taka Bertrand has announced the signing of two student-athletes for the incoming class of 2013. Joining Oss, Netherlands native Puck Vlaskamp, who signed with the Red Storm in January of this year, will be Anastasia Polyakova, a transfer from the University of Portland, and Anna Morozova of Yaroslavl, Russia.
“We’re very excited about having Nastya and Anna join our program this fall,” Bertrand said. “Anastasia brings a high level of maturity and experience after having played at the top singles position for a program that competes in the competitive West Coast Conference and Anna has been one of the top junior players in Russia and has competed extensively on the ITF Junior Circuit. Both players are very driven student-athletes and will make an immediate impact on our program.”
Polyakova’s played at the No. 1 singles slot for all 20 matches during her freshman campaign for the Pilots, winning seven of her first nine duals. The Saint-Petersburg, Russia finished the season as an All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention selection.
Morozova earned a career high Junior ITF Combined Ranking of No. 280 while reaching the semifinals the Samara Cup and the finals of the Magnolia Cup.
With the addition of the impressive trio for the upcoming 2013-2014 campaign, the Red Storm will look to improve upon Bertrand’s first year at the helm of the St. John’s women’s tennis program. After jumping out to a 4-2 start, including wins over local rival Fordham and BIG EAST foe Georgetown, the Red Storm finished the season on a three-match winning streak.
