Virginia Young-Coleman enters her third season as an assistant coach for the St. John's track and field team, where she serves as the throws coach. Young-Coleman is a member of the Red Storm Hall-of-Fame. She was a four-year stand out from 1986-1990 and won USA Track & Field titles in the 20 lb. weight in 1988 and 1989, establishing an American record for the event in 1989. Young-Coleman won the Penn Relays Hammer Throw setting a Penn Relays record in 1989. She was a six time BIG EAST Champion winning four consecutive titles in the 20 lb. weight along with titles in the Shot Put and the Hammer Throw while at St. John's. Young-Coleman continues the direct line of St. John's throwing excellence established by legendary SJU Throws Coach Ken Bantum (1956 Olympian) who coached 1996 Olympian Roman Linschied, 1995 Pan American bronze medalist Sonja Fitts, and Coach Coleman during his 25 year SJU coaching career. Bantum discovered Young-Coleman in the hallways of Andrew Jackson High School (now Campus Magnet) and developed her into a national champion. SJU throwers have won thirteen individual national championships and 43 Big East titles setting 21 Big East records in those events. Coleman, Fitts & Linschied won four Penn Relay Championships in the hammer throw. Now Coach Coleman looks to extend the SJU throwing tradition with the current throws group. Young-Coleman graduated with a B.S. in Marketing and completed her Master's degree at St. John's in Student Development/Higher Education in 2003. She worked in the corporate world until April 1997 when at her Hall-of-Fame induction St. John's President, Rev. Donald J. Harrington, hired her to work in the Admissions Office, where she became the Assistant Director until joining the Track and Field staff in 2003. She is married to Eric Coleman and the couple has two children, Sydney Tianna (10) and Eric Jr. (3).
