Bronx, N.Y. - After having competed the day prior, the Red Strom track & field team had a quick turnaround with the annual Fordham Christmas Classic on Friday. St. John's responded with a strong performance as the team captured three individual titles and consistent top-five finishes in nearly every event. Sophomore Corrine Williams started off the event with a third place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.7 seconds. Freshman LaTasha Collins shared third place with Williams as she also clocked in at 7.7 seconds. Junior Molly Ellis tied three other competitors for seventh with a time of 7.8 seconds. Three Red Storm runners would all cross the line just a moment later as sophomore Maya Lewis and freshman Claire Mooney registered a time of 7.9 seconds while sophomore Shayna Presley finished at 8.0 seconds. Junior Stephanie Barnes recorded a time of 8.3 seconds with freshman Radiya Buchanan, 8.4 seconds, and sophomore Brittany Petersen, 8.9 seconds, rounding out the times for the St. John's runners.
Williams also achieved another top-three finish with her 25.5 second 200-meter dash earning her third place. Ellis placed fourth for the Red Storm with a time of 25.7 seconds. Lewis, junior Trudy-Ann McLean and Collins all finished in the top-ten with times of 26.2 seconds for Lewis and 26.3 seconds for the two St. John's newcomers, McLean and Collins. Mooney ran a time of 26.4 seconds and Presley finished with a time of 27.1 seconds. Petersen crossed the 200-meter finish line in 28.9 seconds. Freshman Nastasya Rodriques was the lone St. John's competitor in the 500-meter run and placed seventh with a time 1:20.9. Sophomore Chelsea Trant was also the only Red Storm entrant in the one-mile run where she placed fourth with a time of 5:28. Senior Nicole Cocozza gave the Red Storm its first individual title at Fordham by capturing the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:01.3. Cocozza has won individual titles at both meets so far this season, as she finished first in the one-mile run at the Bill Ward Invitational. Senior Aryon Trujillo placed second in the 1000-meter with a time of 3:04.3. Junior Alexis Bean ran a time of 3:06.0 to place fourth overall. Sophomore Angela Jarvela earned a time of 3:10.6 and junior Marisela Acevedo finished in 3:45.4. The Red Storm throwers once again topped their competition with wins in both the shot put and weight throw events. Senior Chanel King won the shot put with a throw of 12.98 meters, narrowly edging sophomore teammate Natasha Amazan who threw 12.97 meters. Freshman LaTreace Johnson gave St. John's every spot in the top-three with a shot put of 11.48 meters. Sophomore Danette Hinton had a toss of 10.57 meters and her classmates Angela Onye and Gina Frisa threw 10.51 meters and 9.37 meters respectively. In the weight throw competition St. John's swept the top-six spots with King once again topping the field. Onye finished second at 16.21 meters and Amazan placed third with a throw of 15.66 meters. Hinton, Johnson and Frisa rounded out the Red Storm attempts with throws of 15.29 meters, 12.70 meters and 12.65 meters.
