Fast Track Invite Up Next for St. John's

Feb. 8, 2018

QUEENS, N.Y. - Coming off one of the most challenging weekends on the indoor schedule, the St. John's track and field team are right back in action on Friday to compete in the Fast Track Invite at Ocean Breeze Park in Staten Island.

"We are looking forward to competing at the Fast Track Invite at Ocean Breeze as it will get our team ready for the BIG EAST Championships in a few weeks at the facility," said St. John's head coach Jim Hurt. "We have a number of individuals who will sharpen their efforts by being challenged by the top fields assembled for the meet.

Last weekend, St. John's put together a pair of excellent performances by finishing second at the 2018 Metropolitan Indoor Championships and finishing with a pair of podium visits at the 111th NYRR Millrose Games.

At the Mets, the Johnnies finished with six event wins, highlighted by the performances of Maya Stephens and Leah Anderson.

Freshman sensation Anderson continued her torrid start to her collegiate career by finishing first in the 200-meter dash. Her time of 24.56 was only one-of-two competitors to finish under 25 seconds. Denesha Ransome just missed a second-place mark as the senior posted a 25.09 mark, good for third and a visit to the podium.

In dominating fashion, Stephens won the 400-meter run by over two seconds with a 55.42 time. It was nearly a clean sweep at the podium in the event for the Johnnies as Torisha LaForce and Kafi Ottley finished third and fourth.

The afformentioned trio was joined by Anderson to run in the 4x400-meter relay event, and proved to be the right combination. The group won the event by nearly three seconds, highlighted by a great heat from Anderson, to finish with a time of 3:45.63.

In the field events, Nyla Woods notched another win into her career with a 17.39-meter throw to win the weight throw by over a meter. Amarys Berry won the shot put with a 13.90-meter throw, holding off Decoda Simpson of Fairleigh Dickinson by just 0.02 meters. Antonia Frazier also found the winner's podium by claiming the women's pentathlon title.

On Sunday, the 4x400-relay team turned in its second-best performance of the season at the NYRR Millrose Games to finish second with a time of 3:46.00. Woods also finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 18.10 meters.

Following the meet on Friday, St. John's will enjoy a break to prepare for the 2018 BIG EAST Championships. The meet will take place on Feb. 23-24 at Ocean Breeze Park.
