QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm track & field team heads to the Armory on Saturday to compete in the two-day Indoor BIG EAST Championships. Representing St. John's are nine individual student-athletes who will compete in 12 events at the annual conference meet.
The championships will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, the first phase of the women's pentathlon. Sophomore Priscilla Frederick will compete for St. John's in the event. She is ranked fourth on the BIG EAST list with her Metropolitan Championship (Jan. 28) score of 3,521 points. Frederick will also compete in her premier event, the high jump, which will take place on Sunday at 9 a.m. The sophomore is ranked third in the conference with a jump of 1.80 meters (5 feet, 10.75 inches). She sits behind Connecticut's Carin Knight and Rachel Gehret of Louisville. Knight has cleared the bar at 1.82 meters (5 feet, 11.5 inches) and Gehret is a little short with 1.81 meters (5 feet, 11.25 inches). Last season, Frederick placed third in the Indoor BIG EAST high jump competition, earning her All-BIG EAST honors with a jump of 1.75 meters (5 feet, 8.75 inches).
On the national stage, Frederick is ranked 17th and has met the NCAA provisional height three-straight times and is looking to make the automatic qualifying height this weekend.
The senior sprinting duo of Phobay Kutu-Akoi and Paula Rennalls will team up to compete in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. Kutu-Akoi is ranked fourth in the 60-meters with a career-best seed time of 7.47 seconds. Last season, Kutu-Akoi earned All-BIG EAST honors when she placed eighth in the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.68 seconds. The senior from Silver Spring, Md., is ranked sixth in the 200-meters with a seed time of 24.56 seconds.
Rennalls is ranked 12th in the 200-meter dash with her 24.73 second finish at the Metropolitan Championships in late January. The senior from St. Catherine, Jamaica, is 23rd on the BIG EAST list in the 60-meter with a season-best finish of 7.76 seconds. She finished third in her heat at last season's BIG EAST Championships with her career-best time of 7.65 seconds.
Sophomore Kim Piard leads the way in the middle distance events as she is seeded 11th in the 500-meter dash with a career-best time of 1:14.80, which placed her third at January's Metropolitan Championships. Piard is ranked 23rd in the BIG EAST in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.73 seconds, which she ran at Great Dane Classic on Jan. 23.
Senior Tyneka Greene will be the lone representative for the Red Storm in the distance events. She is ranked 13th in the conference in the 1,000-meter run with a season-best time of 2:54.75.
In the field events, sophomore Bintou Dibba and junior Fayanne Francis will be representing the Red Storm in the long jump, while newcomer Arina Gerasimova will take the reigns for St. John's in the triple jump. Dibba is ranked eighth in the long jump with a distance of 5.81 meters (19 feet, 0.75 inches), while Francis is ranked 18th in the conference with a distance of 5.53 meters (18 feet, 1.75 meters). Gerasimova, a transfer, qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in her first meet with the Red Storm. She ranks first in the conference with a distance of 12.34 meters (40 feet, 6 inches), which she hit at the New Balance Invitational on Feb. 6.
In addition to the individual competitors, the Red Storm plans to run all three relays. The 4x400-meter relay team is ranked 11th out of 16 teams with a season-best time of 3:52.60, run by Asia Nettles, Piard, Rennalls and Julia Smith at January's Great Dane Invite. The 4x800-meter relay squad has the sixth-best time out of nine teams with a time of 9:22.24. Sarah Sudbury, Piard, Greene and Shakira Best ran the time at the Metropolitan Championships where finished runner-up. Finally, the distance medley relay's time of 12:32.46 is ranked eighth out of 11 squads in the conference. The team of Pam Petruski, Nettles, Piard and Greene marked the time at the Penn State Open on Jan. 17.
