QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s track & field standout junior Maya Stephens has been selected to run for Team Canada at the 2017 Francophone Games (2017 Jeux de la Francophonie), an international artistic and athletic celebration held every four years for the Francophonie, or French speaking nations.
Stephens, who just recently earned a spot at the 2017 NCAA Track & Field Regional Championships, will compete for Team Canada’s 4x400-meter relay and 200-meter dash.
The 2017 Francophone Games will be held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, from July 21-30, commemorating the eighth edition of this athletic and artistic festival.
Canada is one of 55 member nations, three associate member nations and 12 observer nations of the Francophonie that are invited to the celebration every four years.
Stephens, who hails from Toronto, Canada, is no stranger to international competition as she last competed for Canada at the 2015 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships.
During this year’s indoor campaign, Stephens marked an impressive streak of five-consecutive gold medal performances in the 200-meter dash. Stephens also owns a pair of second-place finishes in the 4x400-meter relay at the 2017 BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
