QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John’s sprinter Leah Anderson has been named the BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
The freshman welcomed herself to Queens in thrilling fashion, winning both the 200-meter and 400-meter runs at the eighth annual Bill Ward Invite last Thursday.
Anderson dominated the 200-meter event, winning the race by nearly a second at 24.74. The time was the second fastest among freshman this season, and sits eighth in the country.
The Mount Vernon native continued to shine by winning the 400-meter event over a pair of competitors from LIU Brooklyn. Nearly winning this race by a second as well, Anderson’s time of 55.90 places her as the top freshman runner and seventh overall in the country for the 400-meter event.
Both times also qualified Anderson for the ECAC Indoor Championships in March.
Overall, the Red Storm won a total of 11 events at the Bill Ward Invite, the lone home meet of the indoor season for St. John’s.
