RICHMOND, Va. - The St. John's volleyball team fell to Virginia Commonwealth, 3-1 in the second round of the VCU/Third Sports Degree Invitational. The Red Storm (0-2) won the first set, 25-19, but the Rams (2-0) took the next three, 25-14, 25-19 and 25-12. Freshman Ashley Asing finished with 17 digs, while Gabriela Petkova notched 28 assists. In the first set, VCU jumped to a 3-0 lead before a Ruisa Scheffel kill would score the first Red Storm point. A block from Banya allowed STJ to take its first lead of the match at 5-4. Up 19-11 after two consecutive kills from Scheffel, the Rams called a time out. VCU launched a four-point comeback out of the huddle, but weren't able to match the rhythm of the Red Storm, hustling to a 25-19 win as Kun Song notched the set-winning kill. Scheffel would finish the first set with five kills.
The Rams took the second stanza, 25-13, after scoring 11 of the set's final 14 points. Two Banya kills helped the Red Storm rally for six points mid-set and come within four, 13-9. Banya recorded four kills in the set.
A Jordan Haskins solo block in the third set brought the Red Storm within reach, down 14-12. The Rams quickly rallied for three points before a pair of kills and an ace by Song. A block by Haskins on the next point saw VCU's lead diminish to just one, 18-17. The Rams held off the Red Storm with five straight points to take a 23-17 lead before trading points to take the set, 25-19.
STJ came out in the fourth with a 7-3 lead, but the Rams came back to tie it at 9. The Rams took over from there, allowing just three more STJ points in the set, earning the 25-12 victory to take the match.
Scheffel recorded 12 kills, a career-high. Petkova finished the match with 28 assists and 10 digs for a double-double in just her second collegiate match. Mariel Frey led the Rams with 18 kills and 11 digs, while Lenka Melicharkova tallied 37 assists.
