QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore Shawna-Lei Santos and redshirt freshman Briana Guzman have arrived at the U.S Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the 2014 U.S. Women’s Volleyball Open Tryout. The 240-plus athletes representing 106 different colleges are competing for spots on one of three national teams. Three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Olympic Hall of Famer Karch Kiraly will lead the three-day tryout.
After appearing at libero, defensive specialist, and outside hitter as a freshman, Santos started all 32 matches at libero and played in every set for the Red Storm in her sophomore campaign. The native of Hawaii Kai, Hawaii, registered a team-best 572 digs on the season (4.81 per set) and chipped in 100 assists (0.88 per set), which was the second-most on the team. Her 4.81 digs per set average on the season ranked fourth in the conference and 54th in the NCAA, while her 5.19 digs per set in conference play was second-most in the BIG EAST.
In her first season on the court for St. John’s, Guzman played in 27 matches, starting nine of them, while appearing in 65 of the Red Storm’s 119 sets. The middle blocker registered 0.80 blocks per set (fourth-most on the squad) and added 0.85 kills per set on a .254 hitting percentage. The native of North Bergen, N.J., also recorded 82.5 points on the year.
