St. John's Volleyball Wins Spring Tournament At Fordham|

QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s volleyball made its spring debut this weekend, taking on Hofstra, Stony Brook and Fordham in the Bronx, N.Y. The Red Storm defeated both Hofstra and host school Fordham, 2-0, and split the match with Stony Brook, 1-1. At 5-1, St. John’s finished with the best overall record at the tournament.
All-American honorable mention sophomore Karin Palgutova led St. John’s with six kills in the 2-0 (25-22, 25-14) win over Hofstra. Sophomore libero Shawna-Lei Santos held down the back row, while redshirt freshman Briana Guzman and freshman Mona Karkkainen picked up two blocks apiece. All-BIG EAST Second Team member Aleksandra Wachowicz chipped in four kills.
The Red Storm defeated Stony Brook, 25-15, in the first set played, but dropped the second game, 25-17. Palgutova racked up seven kills and three blocks and Guzman recorded four kills and three blocks, while Milligan picked up her first kill in a St. John’s uniform. The second set of the match marked the first playing time for Milligan, Demel, and Moss.
The Red Storm resumes Spring volleyball action on April 12 with a tournament at UConn. St. John’s will then host the 2013 National Champion Penn State volleyball team for a scrimmage on April 13 at 10 a.m. The Red Storm will then wrap up Spring play on April 26 with a tournament at Columbia.
