Head Coach Joanne Persico Announces 2014 Volleyball Schedule|
July 7, 2014
QUEENS, N.Y. – Heading into her 21st season as the head coach of the Red Storm, Joanne Persico has announced the St. John’s volleyball team’s 2014 fall schedule. The 33-game schedule features five teams from the 2013 NCAA Tournament, four of which made it to the second round.
“2014 is a very exciting and challenging schedule,” stated Persico. “With one of the top volleyball conferences in the country, finishing fifth in the nation in RPI, the BIG EAST regular season is going to be a battle every step of the way, but we look forward to competing for and winning our fifth BIG EAST title this season.”
The challenging 2014 season opens up in Smithfield, Rhode Island, for the Bryant Invitational (Aug. 29-30) where the Red Storm will take on Army, UMass-Lowell and host-Bryant University before returning to Queens for its home opener against Saint Peter’s (Sept. 1).
From there, the Red Storm will travel across the country to Honolulu, Hawaii, home of junior libero Shawna-Lei Santos, for the highly competitive Hawaiian Airlines Tournament.
“We have created a strong brand in the state of Hawaii and have had approximately 13 players come to New York to wear the St. John’s red and white,” said Persico. “This tournament gives us the opportunity to play against the best there is in the NCAA while on the road.”
The three-day event opens with a match against the 2013 NCAA second-round and 2012 Final Four Oregon Ducks team (Sept. 4) before taking on a tough New Mexico squad on Sept. 5. Rounding out the tournament will be no easy feat, however, as the Red Storm takes on host-Hawaii, who made a run into the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 18 in the AVCA Coaches’ Poll.
After taking a year off from hosting tournaments, the Red Storm will return home on Sept. 12-13 to host the 2014 Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic that features four matches in two days at Carnesecca Arena in Queens. St. John’s will open things up with a match against Dartmouth and 2013 American East champion New Hampshire on Sept. 12 before rounding things out against St. Francis (N.Y.) and Fresno State on Sept. 13.
“Mr. Kaiser is a living legend, a mentor and a friend that is a strong supporter of women’s volleyball here at St. John’s,” said Persico. “It is only fitting that we salute him by naming our volleyball tournament after him. He is often times in the stands supporting our team and has even helped hand out the tournament awards for us in the past.”
From there, the Red Storm will remain in Queens for one of the most interesting matches of the season against La Salle (Sept. 17).
For the first time in program history, Persico will have the opportunity to coach against one of her former players as 2006 graduate Caitlin Rimigaila returns to Queens as the head coach of a developing La Salle team.
The Red Storm will then head to Towson, Maryland, to round out its tournament schedule as it takes on North Dakota State, Kent State and host-Towson from Sept. 19-20.
Already 16 games into its schedule, the Red Storm will head down to Villanova, Pennsylvania, to open up conference action on the road against Villanova on Sept. 24 before returning home to play DePaul (Sept. 26) and defending BIG EAST champion Marquette (Sept. 27).
Following a match on the road against Seton Hall on Oct. 1, the Red Storm will host a three-game homestead as it takes on Providence (Oct. 4), Butler (Oct. 10) and Xavier (Oct. 11) before returning to the road where it will open a three-game road trip with a match against a 2014 NCAA second-round Creighton team on Oct. 17.
After taking on Georgetown on the road on Oct. 19, the Red Storm will turn things around for the second half of the home-and-home matches with its conference opponents as it looks to make a run at the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament.
“We are very excited for the 2014 season and although we know it will be a very daunting task, we are looking forward to trying to capture our fifth BIG EAST Championship this year,” said Persico.
The Red Storm will also host its annual alumni match on October 5 as Persico returns her top players from years’ past to compete against each other in a friendly match inside Carnesecca Arena.
