Oct. 5, 2005 Queens, N.Y. - The Red Storm volleyball team (15-5, BIG EAST 1-2) moved up to No. 6 in the Northeast Region in the latest RichKern.com/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Regional Computer Index announced this week by RichKern.com and the AVCA. The No. 6 ranking comes on the heels of the Red Storms No. 7 ranking in the initial index. The Red Storm made a small jump in overall ranking this week as it moved from 83 to 76. The jump follows the St. John's three game sweep of Seton Hall University on Friday, Sept. 30. The ranking places St. John's ahead of several BIG EAST schools including Syracuse and Cincinnati. The Red Storm returns to action this weekend against Notre Dame and DePaul. The Saturday, Oct. 8 game against the Fighting Irish begins at 2 p.m. as does Sunday's game against DePaul. Both games will be held at Carnesecca Arena on the Queens campus.

The RichKern.com/AVCA Division I Regional Computer Index takes into consideration the Rich Kern Percentage Index (RKPI) of all NCAA Division I teams, then computes each region based on the overall ranking. The RKPI mimics the NCAA RPI published at the end of the season. The full RKPI can be found at RKPI Rankings. This index is not associated with the official NCAA Division I Regional Rankings, but is provided to give schools input as to how they may be ranked within the region using a computerized formula similar to the NCAA. Teams are placed into regions based on the latest NCAA on-line database. Rich Kern, who runs the RichKern.com web site, was the 2002 AVCA Grant Burger Media Award recipient for his media and promotional contributions to the sport of volleyball.
