QUEENS, N.Y. – After a rookie season in which she became the first St. John’s player to earn First Team All-BIG EAST Honors since 2008, freshman Karin Palgutova was tabbed as an Honorable Mention on the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I All-Northeast Region Team as announced by the AVCA on Tuesday. Out of the 20 members on the All-Northeast Region Team, 10 are BIG EAST players and just three are freshmen. Palgutova is the only BIG EAST freshman on the team.
The 15th St. John’s player to make the Division I All-Northeast Region Team in the history of the program and the first one to receive the honor since 2008, Palgutova finished the season ranked ninth in the nation in service aces per set and eighth in the BIG EAST in kills per set. She was also the only freshman to be named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
In her rookie campaign, Palgutova recorded 53 service aces (0.46 per set), which is the second-most in a season in St. John’s history and just seven shy of the record. The Slovakian also recorded a team-best 3.35 kills per set average on a .274 hitting percentage and compiled the team’s third-highest digs per set average (1.88). The all-around player also racked up the highest single-match block total (9) in a four-set win over Seton Hall on Oct 26.
St. John’s reached the 20-win mark this season for the first time since 2008, compiling a 20-12 overall record (7-8 BIG EAST). The Red Storm also returned to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2008.
