Dec. 23, 2013
QUEENS, N.Y. - Sophomore Karin Palgutova added another postseason honor to her 2013 campaign as the outside hitter was named an All-America honorable mention by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). This is Palgutova's third postseason award as she was also named to the AVCA All-East Coast Region First Team and the All-BIG EAST First Team.
With 4.36 kills per set, Palgutova led the BIG EAST and ranked 22nd in the NCAA. She also led the conference and placed 19th in the nation in points, racking up 4.92 per set. Her 510 kills are sixth most in a season by a member of the Red Storm, while her 1,255 total attacks are third most. In just two years at St. John's, Palgutova has collected 892 career kills, which ranks 10th on the all-time program list.
Palgutova also led the team in attack percentage (.263), recorded the second most digs per set (2.39), and the third most blocks per set (0.62). Her 14 double-doubles on the year both led the team and are a career-high.
St. John's volleyball has now produced 12 AVCA All-Americans with Palgutova becoming the seventh member of the program to receive the honor. Valeria Kovaleva, Wioleta Leszczynska, and Lena Yee were the last members of the Red Storm to be named an All-American, doing so in 2008.
Palgutova also became the fourth St. John's volleyball player to make at least two All-BIG EAST First Teams and the fifth member of the program to earn All-Region honors at least twice.
Palgutova's other accomplishments this season include BIG EAST Player of the Week (Sept. 16), three BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll mentions (Sept. 9, Sept. 30, Oct. 21), and three All-Tournament Teams (Colgate Classic, Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic, Bryant Invitational), which is tied for first by any BIG EAST player this season.
