Tom Farrell, one of the most decorated athletes in St. John's history, returned to the track & field program as a volunteer assistant in January 2000 after retiring from Xerox after 31 years. In 1965, as a St. John's athlete, Farrell set a world record in the 880-yard race. A two-time NCAA and IC4A 800-meter champion, Farrell also set a world record in the 600-meters. He was the first three-time Haggerty Award recipient, which is presented to the most outstanding St. John's University athlete. In 1964 and 1968, Farrell represented the United States at the Olympics. At the Tokyo games in 1964, Farrell placed fifth in the 800-meters. In the 1965 Mexico City Olympics, Farrell won the bronze medal in the 800-meter run. Upon graduation from St. John's in 1966, Farrell joined the U.S. Army and served in the military until 1968. Farrell currently resides in Los Angeles, Calif., with his wife, Chris, who is also a St. John's graduate. The couple has two children, Shawn, an alumnus of UCLA, and Jennifer, who graduated from Cal-State Northridge and four grandchildren, Jordan, 8, James, 6, Zoe, 5, and Haley, 3.
