QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John’s cross country team wrapped up its fourth meet of the season on Friday with a sixth-place finish at the Metropolitan Cross Country Championships from historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

“We had a solid team effort today,” said Head Coach Jim Hurt on his team’s outing.

Stephanie Gerland grabbed the top spot for the Johnnies on Friday, posting a new personal best at 19:11.8 to finish 11th. The sophomore has now finished in the top-11 in all three of her 5K races this season, with two coming at Van Cortlandt Park. Also placing in the top-20 was teammate Therese Gallagher, who finished 17th at 19:21.7.

Rounding out the top-50 for St. John’s was junior Elizabeth Costantino (20:13.0, 39th) and senior Melissa Hidalgo (20:23.7, 43rd). Costantino, who suffered an injury and was unable to finish at the Paul Short Run last week, was able to secure a top-40 finish and register as the No. 3 scorer for the Johnnies.

Finishing just outside the top-50 was junior Nicole McCarthy whose time of 20:52.3 (55th) was good for a new personal best, and closed out the scoring for St. John’s.

“Stephanie Gerland had a break through effort and Tess Gallagher continued to impress with another outstanding effort,” said Hurt. “Lizzy & Melissa were a bit off their game today, but Nicole McCarthy ran her best effort of the year to close out our scoring & secure our 6th place finish.”

Sophomore Jackie Gallagher (21:10.6, 63rd) and junior Shannon Page (21:12.8, 64th) both cracked the top-65 for the Johnnies, while freshmen Leah Rivers (22:06.7, 80th) and Leah Anderson (22:26.9, 85th) jumped into the top-85.

St. John’s middle-distance runners continued to see action to groom into shape for the upcoming track & field season as Torisha LaForce, Tiffany Perrier, Kafi Ottley, Jariah McFadden, Lilith Ida, Danica Wens, and Antonia Frazier all posted quality times.

“Our mid-distance, long sprinters, and multi eventers did a great job in over the Van Cortlandt Park course,” said Hurt. “We will need everyone's best effort going into the Big East in two weeks in Wisconsin."

Kenosha, Wisconsin is the next destination for the Johnnies for the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 28.
