The St. John's cross country team battled the bitter cold to finish tenth at the 2017 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships in Kenosha, Wis. on Saturday.

In one of the premier conference championship events in the country, the Red Storm was led by sophomores Therese Gallagher and Stephanie Gerland who both garnered top-50 finishes. Gallagher's time of 22:24.8 (41st) was good for a new personal best in a 6K event, while Gerland tied her personal best at 23:00.8 (50th), a time she duplicated at the Paul Short Run earlier this season.

"I thought we competed hard," said St. John's head coach Jim Hurt. "Our sophomores showed some great progress today."

Also grabbing a top-60 finish was senior Melissa Hidalgo who placed 57th at 23:39.2. While the time was not good for a new personal best, Coach Hurt was proud of his senior's leadership and her growth as a runner since the beginning of her freshman season.

"Melissa has really come a long way," said Hurt. "From being a walk-on as a freshman to finishing where she finished today, and to be able to place at the BIG EAST Championships. We are very proud of her efforts."

Nicole McCarthy continues to impress as the season rolls along as the junior set another personal best in the 6K to finish 63rd (24:06.9). After shaving nearly three minutes off her previous personal best at the Paul Short Run earlier this year, McCarthy dropped another 48 seconds off her time to garner another top-time.

"I thought we had four good races with Tess, Steph, Melissa, and Nicole," said Hurt. "We were battling some injuries today that I think really hurt our team scores."

Rounding out the scoring for the Johnnies was sophomore Jackie Gallagher who finished 68th at 24:51.4.

Juniors Elizabeth Costantino and Shannon Page placed 69th (25:41.7) and 70th (26:18.4), respectively, to complete the day for the Red Storm. Costantino, who has been battling an injury over the past month, was able to finish the race but could not earn scoring honors.

Villanova earned the team title with 39 points, while Providence's Catarina Rocha picked up the individual championship.

St. John's will now turn its attention towards the NCAA Northeast Regional on Nov. 10 in Buffalo, N.Y. The trip will be the Red Storm's first trip upstate this season.
