St. John's Concludes Season at ECAC Championships

Nov. 18, 2017

BRONX, N.Y. - The St. John’s cross country team took to the starting line for the final time on Saturday, grabbing a third-place finish in the ECAC Championships Coaches Division at historic Van Cortlandt Park.

The meet was highlighted by sophomore Therese Gallagher claiming the individual title in the Coaches Division run, as well as two other top-20 finishes.

“I am very pleased with our third place finish and the way our team raced today,” said St. John’s head coach Jim Hurt. “We finished the season on a high note with Tess Gallagher winning the Coaches Race.”

While the time wasn’t quite good enough for a new personal best, Gallagher continued to dominate in 5K races as the sophomore has now finished in the top-20 in all four 5K races for the Johnnies this season.

Also grabbing a top-10 finish was fellow sophomore Stephanie Gerland who finished sixth. Gerland also seems to enjoy running at Van Cortlandt Park as the sophomore finished ninth (Fordham Fiasco), 11th (Metropolitan Championships), and sixth (ECAC Championships) at three races from the historic grounds.

Junior Nicole McCarthy, who Hurt cited as one of his most-improved runners this season, continued to excel late in the season with an 18th-place finish on Saturday. The junior set a new personal best in the 5K event (20:29.1) to cap off a great season.

Rounding out the scoring for the Johnnies was another sophomore in Jackie Gallagher who finished just outside the top-20 by only four seconds to place 21st.

“All four of our scoring runners are young and return next year,” said Hurt excitedly. “We are so excited for next year as we have seen some great improvement from our young runners this entire cross country season.”

Today proved to be a great sign for the Red Storm, running without two of its top runners all season in Elizabeth Costantino and Melissa Hidalgo who were both out with injuries.

Middle-distance runners Torisha LaForce, Eboni Birch, and Melissa Greaves also competed for St. John’s on Saturday, looking to get in conditioning shape for the upcoming track and field season.

The focus now shifts to the track for Coach Hurt and the Johnnies as the St. John’s track and field team will look to build upon the momentum from the end of the cross country season as they are set to begin competition in December.
