QUEENS, N.Y. -
St. John’s will serve as host to one of the nation’s premier cross country events as the BIG EAST Championships are set to take place on Friday, Oct. 26 at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
The women’s 6K race is set to begin at 11 a.m. with the men’s 8K race to follow at approximately 11:50 a.m.
“We are excited about competing in the BIG EAST Championship,” said head coach Jim Hurt. “Our team has worked hard to be ready, and we look forward to running against some of the top cross country runners in the nation on the historic Van Cortlandt Park course.”
The Red Storm will look to improve upon last year’s 13th place finish at the conference title meet, as the squad returns three of last year’s top-five team finishers. The top returning runner from last year’s BIG EAST Championship is junior Chelsea Trant who placed 101st overall. Michelle Duffy and Alexis Bean were the next competitors to cross the line for St. John’s, doing so within eleven seconds of each other. A freshmen group of Kerri Butler, Ashlin Conroy, Veronica Thompson, Michelle Van Pelt and Stephanie Van Pelt will be counted on to vault the Red Storm up the leader board.
St. John’s started the 2012 cross country season strong with titles at both the Hofstra Brick Stone Run and the C.W. Post Invite. The Red Storm has battled injuries throughout the season but will feature a full complement of runners for the BIG EAST Championships. Recently, St. John’s placed seventh at the Metropolitan Championships and second at the program’s annual Fall Festival.
The BIG EAST Championship features some of the top cross country programs in the nation including Georgetown and Villanova who have combined to win the last three NCAA titles. The Providence Friars, last year’s second place finisher, also returns a pair of top-ten finishers from last season.
