About the NCAA Regionals
Hosted by the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York, the 2017 Northeast Regional serves as a qualifier for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. The event begins at 11:00 am with the women's 6K championship race and concludes at 12:00 pm with the men's 10K championship race.
The women's 6K championship race features 39 teams and 358 individual competitors. Providence is the favorite to win the Northeast Regional as they are ranked first in the Coaches' Poll and 10th in the NCAA Poll. The Friars placed four runners in the top ten of the Big East Championship including Individual Champion, Catarina Rocha, as the team placed second to Villanova.
St. John’s will send eight runners to the course on Friday to compete: Leah Anderson, Jackie Gallagher, Therese Gallagher, Melissa Hidalgo, Stephanie Gerland, Leah Rivers, Shannon Page, and Nicole McCarthy.
Last Time Out
The Red Storm battled the bitter cold to finish tenth at the 2017 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships in Kenosha, Wis. on Oct. 28.
In one of the premier conference championship events in the country, the Red Storm was led by sophomores Therese Gallagher and Stephanie Gerland who both garnered top-50 finishes. Gallagher's time of 22:24.8 (41st) was good for a new personal best in a 6K event, while Gerland tied her personal best at 23:00.8 (50th), a time she duplicated at the Paul Short Run earlier this season. Junior Nicole McCarthy also set a personal best for the Johnnies, while senior Melissa Hidalgo grabbed a top-60 finish.
Expect a sloppy day on the course tomorrow. With record rainfall hitting the Buffalo area over the week, conditions are not expected to be ideal for the race.
